This week’s topic was “Transmedia Narratives”, not to be confused with multimedia, which is the telling of ONE story across multiple platforms, transmedia is the telling of MULTIPLE stories across MULTIPLE platforms.
As stated by Henry Jenkins, “Transmedia storytelling represents a process where integral elements of a fiction get dispersed systematically across multiple delivery channels for the purpose of creating a unified and coordinated entertainment experience. Ideally, each medium makes its own unique contribution to the unfolding of the story.”
This concept fits perfectly in relation to the entire Cinderella franchise, which has inevitably become an internal part of our culture due to Disney’s ability to evolve Cinderella into a transmedia project. In addition to the 1950 Disney film, Cinderella has progressed long past her first animation and the world of transmedia storytelling is far from over for this princess.
Many long forgotten stories are being born again, through new mediums with new stories and new plot twists. Soon it will just be expected that when a movie is created, an entirely new world will come along with it.
